Hard on the Soles × A Converse Letter

I’ve traveled to over 30 countries and performed stand-up comedy in 10 of them. That means a lot of airports, a lot of walking, a lot of stages, and a lot of packing mistakes made over the years.

Somewhere along the way, I realized something: I’ve worn Converse in at least 13 of those countries on city streets, on international flights, backstage before shows, and, without really thinking about it, in at least four internationally airing commercials and on more stages than I can count. This isn’t a sponsored story. It’s more of an observation. Because if we’re being honest, Converse are not the best shoes to travel in for comfort. Anyone who’s sprinted through an airport in them knows this. But… they work!

For me, it’s almost always been the low-cut. Now don’t get me wrong I’ve had the high-tops and in various colors but the low-cuts just look better. Easy on, easy off, and somehow still look right whether I’m on a stage, on set, or Wander’n a city I’ve never been to before. There’s something about them that just works. They photograph well. They don’t try too hard. They look just as natural on a street in Berlin as they do backstage before a show or standing under hot lights on a commercial set. Over time, they became less of a conscious choice and more of a default.

I didn’t plan this. I wasn’t documenting it. I just kept noticing them show up in photos later Tokyo, Athens, Bangkok, Stockholm, India, etc. On stage. On set. In moments where the only thing I was focused on what was in front of me.

Comedy, like travel, is mostly movement. You’re constantly arriving, leaving, adapting, figuring it out as you go. And somewhere between rehearsals, flights, and performances, certain things stick around because they fit into that rhythm. For me, Converse ended up being one of those things.

They’ve been there for punchlines that landed and some that didn’t.

For long travel days where comfort was… negotiable.

Sometimes the things that stay with you aren’t the most practical choice they’re just the ones that feel like you.
